Severn power station begins commercial power generation

Severn Power Station, the most advanced gas-fired power station in the UK, began generating power commercially on Tuesday 9th November 2010 when the first of its twin gas and steam turbines was brought on line.

Situated at Uskmouth near Newport in South Wales, the new power station is owned by DONG Energy, Denmark’s largest power generation company. It will operate at 50 per cent capacity until the second gas and steam turbine is brought on-stream later this year.  Once fully operational, Severn Power Station will be capable of generating 824 megawatts (MW) of electricity – sufficient to meet the average power needs of up to 1.5 million homes.

Richard Tyreman, Project Director, commented: “We are delighted that Severn Power Station is now generating electricity on a commercial scale. The facility will make a significant contribution to the UK’s electricity needs for many years to come. It will also help to reduce climate change because it uses very advanced technology that makes it more efficient at generating electricity and significantly reduces emissions.”

Severn Power Station represents a £600 million investment by DONG Energy and more than 1,000 people were involved in its construction.
