Climate partners and energy efficiency

We advise our business customers on how to reduce their energy consumption

At DONG Energy, our objective is to increase our Danish customers' energy savings fourfold from 2012 to 2020. This is done through climate partnerships, sales of consulting services to companies as well as initiatives to disseminate subsidy possibilities in the energy savings programme of the Danish Energy Agency.

Advice on reducing energy consumption

Through long-term climate partnerships we advise our business customers on how to reduce their energy consumption. This is an efficient way of reducing CO2 emissions, and this can generate significant savings on the electricity bill. This helps energy-intensive companies maintain their competitive edge. One example is Novo Nordisk which, through its climate partnership with DONG Energy, has realised increasing savings, in 2013 reaching DKK 50 million in annual savings on the company's
Danish factories.

In 2016, Novozymes, Toms group, Tivoli and Novo Nordisk were the climate partners, who achieved the biggest cost savings. In 2013, DONG Energy introduced the option for climate partners to purchase biogas certificates for full or partial coverage of their gas consumption, thus further reducing their carbon footprint.

Partnership agreements

DONG Energy has entered into more than 135 partnership agreements, for example together with:

Climate partnership with Novo NordiskClimate partnership with Novo Nordisk

DONG Energy and Novo Nordisk launched in 2007 a climate partnership together, as a new model for cooperation on energy savings, accountability and climate. The partnership allowed Novo Nordisk to speed up its target to reduce CO2 emissions significantly and convert energy use to be more climate-friendly. The partnership has succeeded beyond all expectations.

  • Pioneering model for cooperation between companies, municipalities and energy company

  • Novo Nordisk surpassed the goal and got annual savings of 45 million DKK

  • The power is reserved from renewable sources

  • More than 130 climate partnerships with business', municipalities and organisations

DONG Energy is an expert on tailored consulting services which decrease energy consumption. Our climate partnerships with companies, municipalities and organisations aim to cut energy consumption and build a more environmentally friendly profile for the partner concerned. The partner can choose to convert the energy savings realised into the purchase of renewable energy.

Novo Nordisk - a member of the WWF Climate Savers Programme
In 2006 Novo Nordisk, a world-leading company in diabetes care, became a member of the WWF Climate Savers Programme. A target was set; by 2014 CO2 emissions from Novo Nordisk's global production are to be 10% lower than in 2004. Novo Nordisk is to achieve the reduction target through three levers. First priority was given to energy savings at Novo Nordisk's Danish production sites and the subsequent purchase of renewable energy.

Novo Nordisk climate partnership

Because of the partnership with DONG Energy Novo Nordisk now emits less CO2 than in 2004, despite the fact that production has increased significantly. There are also achieved annual savings of 45 million DKK after the necessary investment have been repaid. The plan was that Novo Nordisk's total electricity consumption from the Danish production was converted to renewable energy by 2014. This was achieved already in 2011 since surprisingly large energy savings was materialized. In total there is completed more than 300 projects on energy savings within heating, ventilation, cooling and lighting.

Wind power from Horns Rev II

The agreement was pioneering in that it also helped to secure the financial basis for the construction of the offshore wind farm Horns Rev II, witch at the time of construction was the world's largest offshore wind farm. Novo Nordisk has committed to purchase power from the turbines as savings in energy consumption was realized.

A growing number of climate partnerships

DONG Energy is continuously building on the experience gained through climate partnerships. To date we have entered into a climate partnership with more than 130 companies, municipalities and organisations. In the future we aim to advise even more companies, municipalities and organisations on energy savings through climate partnerships.
