The West of Shetland area is characterised by rough weather, large water depths and lack of infrastructure, but by means of the latest technology and DONG Energy's extensive knowledge of the region, we are well-prepared for realising the assets of the area.
The West of Shetland area comprises a large share of the remaining oil and natural gas reserves in the United Kingdom. Through development of the region, the United Kingdom will be able to reduce its import of energy and improve the country's security of energy supplies.
DONG Energy became involved in the West of Shetland area in 2000. We have two producing gas fields (Laggan and Tormore) and two gas fields that are currently being developed (Edradour and Glenlivet). Further we have an oil and gas discoveries in Rosebank.
Making use of the expertise from the Ormen Lange field
The key to developing the discoveries we have made in the West of Shetland area is using new technology and how optimizing how we handle the challenges in the region.
Among other things, we can use the experience we have gained from our co-ownership of the Norwegian natural gas field, Ormen Lange. This field is also located at water depths between 800 and 1,000 metres and weather and wind conditions are similar to the conditions in the West of Shetland area. Since 2007, natural gas has been produced from subsea installations in the Ormen Lange field. This has given us unique knowledge and expertise that can be used in the fields in the West of Shetland area.
Development comprising important pipeline system
The development of the Laggan-Tormore fields also comprised installation of a transport system for the gas to Scotland via the Shetland Islands. The first transport system in the area. This transport system now provides an opportunity for existing and future discoveries in the area. The Glenlivet and Edradour development projects will be linked to this infrastructure.
