Tomorrow’s wind turbine
DONG Energy is one of the world’s largest operators of offshore wind turbines, and we are involved in the EU project UPWIND, aimed at developing tomorrow’s wind turbines reaching capacities of as much as 8-10 Megawatts. Ten MW wind turbines are still a long way off, as the largest wind turbines today have a capacity of 3.6 MW.
Pilot projects
Pilot wind turbines are the link between the manufacturer’s prototype and the final version of the turbine to be manufactured and erected in wind farms. DONG Energy have activities within demonstration in Frederikshavn and Gunfleet Sands Offshore Wind Farm.
Improved aerodynamics and rotor design
The aim of UPWIND is to develop precise specifications for how the various manufacturers and subcontractors are to design and manufacture the next generation of wind turbines. Among other things, the project focuses on improving the quality and strength of the turbine components, including aerodynamics, gear and rotor design
