London Array Offshore Wind Farm
Since February 2003 DONG Energy has been involved in the development of the world’s largest wind farm, London Array, by Britain’s east coast.
The first part of London Array comprises 175 wind turbines and will have a total capacity of 630 MW, making the farm the world’s largest when all the turbines are in operation by the end of 2012. By this time the farm will be able to cover the annual power consumption of 480,000 British households.
London Array will be built 20 km off the east coast of Britain, at some low-tide sand banks marking the entry to the shipping route into London via the Thames. Approximately 10 kilometres further towards land are 48 turbines, which together make up Gunfleet Sands, opened by DONG Energy in June 2010.
London Array could potentially be developed in two phases, whereby the farm could be extended to a total capacity of 1,000 MW.
