When Horns Rev 2 was opened
When DONG Energy inaugurated Horns Rev 2 in autumn 2009, it was the largest offshore wind farm in the world. Horns Rev 2 is an impressive engineering feat in terms of both its size and, in particular, its location. The fact that it is 30 km from the coast makes Horns Rev 2 the offshore wind farm that is furthest from land. With the layout of the 91 turbines in a fan formation, DONG Energy is making optimum use of the wind conditions in the North Sea. Horns Rev 2 is also the first offshore wind farm in history with an accommodation platform.
- Important capabilities and knowledge from Horns Rev 2
- Horns Rev 2 put Denmark on the world map
- Close cooperation with local companies
From inception to today
DONG Energy has many years of experience of building and operating offshore wind farms. With Horns Rev 2, we were involved from the very start. From the first ideas and the conceptual phase through the installation and construction phase to today, when we are operating Horns Rev 2. The creation of Horns Rev 2 has provided us with even greater knowledge and important capabilities that we can apply to other projects.
It has given us valuable insight into all the processes involved in the design and construction of offshore wind farms. Working offshore is very demanding, complex and costly. However, the knowledge we have acquired is beneficial to us now, for instance in the construction of Anholt Offshore Wind Farm. When it is completed in 2013, this farm will be twice the size of Horns Rev 2.
Local knowledge
Throughout the construction of Horns Rev 2, DONG Energy worked closely with a number of local suppliers in Esbjerg. KEM Offshore is one of the local companies with which DONG Energy worked and continues to work. KEM Offshore currently transports crew to and from Horns Rev 2.
KEM Offshore has many years of experience of working offshore as its employees are primarily former fishermen. Precisely this knowledge and experience of the sea makes KEM Offshore a professional and competent partner on Horns Rev 2.
"There is no doubt that DONG Energy’s presence in the Port of Esbjerg is helping retain jobs in the local area and enhance the overall skills base in wind energy. The rest of the world is also aware that we in Denmark have a competitive edge in wind energy," says Knud Mikkelsen, sales manager at KEM Offshore.
Development, construction and operation of some of the world's largest offshore wind farms
The construction of Horns Rev 2 helped put Denmark on the world map in offshore wind energy. We currently develop, construct and operate some of the world's largest offshore wind farms. If you want to read more about DONG Energy’s wind activities, please click on the link to the right
