Many years’ collaboration important to DONG Energy’s leading position in offshore wind
Siemens is one of the companies with which DONG Energy has been collaborating for many years. Siemens turbines were used on the Vindeby offshore wind farm near Lolland. When it was constructed in 1991, Vindeby was the world’s first offshore wind farm. Since then, Siemens turbines have been installed on, for example, Horns Rev 2, which is one of several of the world’s largest offshore wind farms, operated by DONG Energy. In 2009, DONG Energy and Siemens concluded the world’s largest agreement on the supply of offshore wind turbines. You can read more about the agreement via the links to the right.
More than 3,300 new jobs in five years
Siemens manufactures its wind turbines at Siemens Wind Power's factories, which are located in Brande in Central Jutland, along with its headquarters. Siemens Wind Power has experienced extensive growth in recent years. The number of employees has grown from around 850 in 2004 to around 7,000 globally in 2010. Of those 7,000, around 4,200 are employed in Denmark. The collaboration with DONG Energy has been a significant factor in this development. The collaboration has contributed to Siemens Wind Power investing in the expansion of turbine manufacture, creating growth and jobs in Brande and the surrounding area.
"The extended supplier agreement with DONG Energy is the largest of its kind in the world and will further strengthen our position as the market-leading supplier of offshore wind turbines. The agreement also supports our commitment to the Danish domestic market and our most recent job creation in Denmark," says Jens-Peter Saul, CEO of Business Unit Siemens Wind Power.
A good example of the ability of green energy production to lead to growth and job creation is DONG Energy's Horns Rev 2 offshore wind farm. With its location off the Esbjerg coast, it has created further activity and jobs in Esbjerg.
