Thermal Power focuses on providing stable electricity and heat production for our customers while we reduce CO2 emissions in energy production. We do this by having some of the world's most efficient power stations, and by investing in the development of new CO2-neutral energy technologies.

Reducing CO2 emissions
About 15 % of DONG Energy's electricity and heat production in 2006 was based on renewable energy or CO2-neutral fuels, while 85 % was based on fossil fuels. In 2009, DONG Energy set itself the following target for 2040: To have reduced CO2 emissions in electricity and heat production per energy unit produced to 15 % of the 2006-level. Already in 2020, we expect that CO2 emissions are more than halved from 638 g/kWh to 260 g/kWh. We fulfil this goal by investing in renewable energy and increased use of biomass in electricity and heat production.
Highly efficient power stations
Most of Thermal Power’s power stations combines production of electricity and heat. It increases the exploitation of fuel resources. We maintain and optimize our current thermal-based production in the Nordic power market while also increasing the use of CO2-neutral biomass. In Norway, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, we have commissioned three new gas-fired power stations. The projects are based on our knowledge of thermal power generation, and overall these new stations contribution with a capacity of approximately 1,500 MW.
New technologies use biomass
Thermal Power also develops new technologies for exploiting CO2-neutral biomass and waste as a substitute for fossil fuels in power production. We have already taken the first big step in that direction and developed the three unique technologies Inbicon, Pyroneer and REnescience that utilize biomass, waste and other residues for energy production.
