DONG Energy was among the first energy companies in the world to build biomass-fired power stations. Today, we are one of the leaders in developing power stations that reduce CO2 per kWh generated by utilising CO2-neutral fuels such as straw, wood pellets and wood chips.
Biomass is a CO2-neutral fuel because it produces the same amount of CO2 when burned as it absorbs during growth. Increasing the use of biomass in power and heat generation therefore reduces CO2 emissions per kWh generated.
Firing with straw and wood pellets For quite some time, we have been burning residual products from agriculture and forestry at a number of our power stations. The biomass used is primarily straw, wood pellets and wood chips from farming and forestry.
State-of-the-art co-firing DONG Energy began its research and development within co-firing of biomass some years ago and we have already come a long way.
One example is the Danish Studstrup Power Station which is a designated multifuel power station. Here we have developed an in-house technology that enables us to co-fire straw and coal in the same boiler while maintaining the same high efficiency. The boiler is state-of-the-art technology, and we are a technology leader in the field of co-firing, where the fuels are pulverised and injected into the combustion chamber.
