Basic Offshore Safety Training - a course in rescue and evacuation methods
Basic Offshore Safety Training ” is a course for all employees in Exploration & Production and supplier employees who will be working offshore. At the course, the attendants learn how to react in emergency situations, eg if it becomes necessary to evacuate a platform, in case of fire or in case the helicopter taking them to the platform has to make an emergency landing at sea.

- Training in correct behaviour in case of an unwanted event
- Health check – being fit for offshore transport
- Brush-up of the course
The course is a good example of DONG Energy’s QHSE culture. We expect that our employees and suppliers do not compromise on safety and encourage them to act accordingly, but we must provide tools and training so that they can react correctly in case of an emergency.
Training in evacuation
One of the exercises that the attendants do at the ”Basic Offshore Safety Training” course, is free fall in a lifeboat. It is necessary to have training in this discipline in case a platform must be evacuated.
Evacuation primarily takes place via helicopter, but if there is not time for evacuation via helicopter, evacuation will take place from a specific evacuation point at the platform from where the employees will be placed in lifeboats and the lifeboats will be launched from the platform in a so-called free fall. The exercise takes place at training facilities in Denmark, Norway and in the UK. The attendants must also do an exercise in fire fighting.
Fit for fight offshore
All persons who will be working or visiting a drilling rig or production platform complete ”Basic Offshore Safety Training”. Before attending the course and going offshore, the persons must undergo a health check to ensure that the concerned person is in good health, has no heart conditions and is physically fit. We do not take chances – it is always ”The Safe Way or No Way”.
“As an Exploration & Production employee at DONG Energy, you have been given the mandate to say ”the Safe Way or No Way”, and you and I have the right and not least the duty to act accordingly”
Paul Ludvig Jørgensen, Exploration & Production QHSE
Passing the course is a requirement
It is requirement in Exploration & Production and fully in compliance with DONG Energy’s basic QHSE principles that all persons going offshore must pass the course. We do not compromise. All persons who have passed the course will have to attend a brush-up course every four years.
