Ormen Lange: High-level deep-sea production
The natural gas from the gigantic Norwegian natural gas field, Ormen Lange, produces by means of the most path-breaking technological production facilities worldwide. DONG Energy holds a 10% interest in the field.
- Ormen Lange is DONG Energy's largest producing field
- One of the world's most significant offshore solutions
The Norwegian natural gas field, Ormen Lange, is DONG Energy’s largest producing field. DONG Energy's share of the natural gas reserves constitutes approximately 40 billion m3 natural gas, which corresponds to the Danish natural gas consumption for almost 10 years. Consequently, the field is the prime contributor to achieving Exploration & Production's target that 30% of the natural gas sold by DONG Energy should come from internal production.
The Ormen Lange natural gas field is located in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea, approximately 120 km north-west of Kristiansund with water depths are between 800 and 1100 metres. The natural gas is located in the subsoil approximately two kilometres below. The field was discovered in 1997. The development activities were initiated in 2003 and the field started producing in 2007.
An exceptional offshore solution
The Ormen Lange natural gas field requires significant operational competences. The water depths, the uneven seabed due to the Storegga slide 8000 years ago, and the local weather conditions have been major challenges in connection with the development activities and production and have required the use of new and path-breaking technology.
The Ormen Lange field comprises one of the most exceptional and complex offshore solutions worldwide. The natural gas is produced in subsea installations instead of via a platform. The subsea installations are connected with a treatment terminal at Nyhamna via a pipeline system in the seabed.
The natural gas is processed in Nyhamna and transported to the United Kingdom or to continental Europe via Langeled, a 1200 kilometre subsea pipeline.
