Case: Climate partnership with Novo Nordisk
Novo Nordisk has signed a climate partnership agreement with DONG Energy to lower Novo Nordisk's energy consumption. Until 2020 Novo Nordisk will convert all energy savings realised at its Danish manufacturing facilities into the purchase of renewable energy from DONG Energy's offshore wind farm Horns Rev 2.
- Climate partnerships
- The Horns Rev 2 offshore wind farm
- More than 30 climate partnerships
DONG Energy is an expert on tailored consulting services which decrease energy consumption. Our climate partnerships with companies, municipalities and organisations aim to cut energy consumption and build a more environmentally friendly profile for the partner concerned. The partner can choose to convert the energy savings realised into the purchase of renewable energy.
Novo Nordisk - a member of the WWF Climate Savers Programme
In 2006 Novo Nordisk, a world-leading company in diabetes care, became a member of the WWF Climate Savers Programme. A target was set; by 2014 CO2 emissions from Novo Nordisk's global production are to be 10% lower than in 2004. Novo Nordisk is to achieve the reduction target through three levers. First priority was given to energy savings at Novo Nordisk's Danish production sites and the subsequent purchase of renewable energy.
Novo Nordisk climate partnership
In 2007 Novo Nordisk teamed up with DONG Energy, and this climate partnership was the first of its kind. Under the partnership DONG Energy will help Novo Nordisk reduce the company’s energy consumption at its Danish production sites.
Novo Nordisk has chosen to convert the savings realised at its Danish production sites into the purchase of wind power from Horns Rev 2. Together with other initiatives, this will help facilitate that the entire electricity consumption of Novo Nordisk's Danish production facilities will be converted into renewable energy by 2014.
Offshore wind power from Horns Rev 2
Novo Nordisk and a number of other climate partners have decided to convert the savings realised in the climate partnership into the purchase of power from Horns Rev 2 for a certain period of time. This has been a contributing factor to DONG Energy in constructing the wind farm.
Horns Rev 2 was inaugurated in September 2009, and it consists of 91 wind turbines which made it the so far world’s largest wind farm. Horns Rev 2 has the capacity of 209 MW which equals the annual electricity consumption of 200,000 households. The offshore wind farm is situated 30 kilometres off the Danish west coast.
A growing number of climate partnerships
DONG Energy is continuously building on the experience gained through climate partnerships. To date we have entered into a climate partnership with more than 60 companies, municipalities and organisations. In the future we aim to advise even more companies, municipalities and organisations on energy savings through climate partnerships.
