Value from waste
REnescience A/S supplies the world with a new clean technology that can turn more than 95% of the biodegradable material contained in mixed municipal solid waste into a "bio-liquid".
This liquid is highly suited for biogas production and a host of other things including second-generation bioethanol.
REnescience® separates organic material from inorganic material in waste. This opens a range of highly valuable paths.
Now waste can be separated through a highly efficient REnescience process applying enzymes and various process steps. Source separation of household waste is no longer necessary. But where source separation does take place, REnescience makes source separation work better.
REnescience in brief:
- We let enzymes do the hard work separating waste.
- REnescience unlocks more value from waste.
- The gate-fee level is highly competitive.
REnescience A/S is a subsidiary of DONG Energy and a sister company to Inbicon A/S who aim to "make ethanol work for the world".
We let the enzymes do the hard work separating waste
Today's waste handling systems often rely on impractical methods for separating our municipal solid waste (MSW): they require every single household to sort waste into different bins for organic and inorganic waste and for waste collectors to transport these different waste streams separately. While the aim of using organic waste is extremely sound, methods available to communities are too cumbersome, and to be truthful, not always easy for citizens to carry out consistently. But why not let enzymes do all of the work, or at least some of the work?
REnescience is a path-breaking new Danish waste treatment process which accepts unsorted municipal solid waste. Using enzymes, our process liquefies organic material contained in the unsorted MSW thereby enabling biogas production from the biological contents of our waste. The remaining solid part contains glass, PVC and metals suitable for recycling. And a fraction comprising of textiles, woody materials and low-grade plastics which is suitable as a fuel in high-efficiency energy production.
REnescience can thus replace or strengthen source segregation systems. It is not necessarily a case of "either or", it can be "both and".
REnescience offers many advantages
REnescience offers a single-point enzymatic separation of unsorted municipal solid waste resulting in valuable outputs:
- Organic material in unsorted municipal solid waste is separated into a bio-liquid which is highly suitable for subsequent biogas production.
- Digestate from biogas production contains phosphorous suitable as a fertiliser.
- Recycling of glass, metals and high-grade plastics contained in unsorted MSW.
- Solid fuel comprising low-grade plastic, textiles and woody material.
But there are more advantages to the environment from deploying REnescience.
- REnescience as a "front-end" process to a new energy from waste (EfW) plant would enable an estimated 10% point higher electrical efficiency thereby ensuring higher energy efficiency.
- Since significant parts of the waste is directed to biogas or recycling, the need for traditional waste incineration capacity is reduced.
Our technology can also lower waste treatment costs
Waste operators and local communities can potentially achieve a lower waste treatment cost from using REnescience compared to a new waste incineration plant without REnescience:
- A new waste incineration concept with higher electrical efficiency rate can be introduced to handle the residual solid fuel part (for example 10% higher electrical efficiency). This increases plant revenues.
- Biogas is often incentivised by government schemes thus enabling even higher margins.
- Saving of certain logistical costs associated with a "dual system" which goes hand in hand with source segregation of household waste.
