DONG Energy’s mission focuses not only on the production and supply of more energy, but also on the supply of reliable, carbon-free energy.
We constantly turn it on and off, 24 hours a day and demand continues to grow. A world without energy is unthinkable. But it is precisely this demand for energy that is causing climate change and pollution through carbon-dioxide. DONG Energy’s mission focuses not only on the production and supply of more energy, but also on the supply of reliable, carbon-free energy. That’s what we strive towards every day through new investments and ongoing modifications.
The 85/15 strategy
At the moment, 85% of DONG Energy’s heat and electricity is produced from fossil fuels, primarily coal. However, in the next 30 years, we have set ourselves the target of reducing carbon emissions produced per kWh to just 15% of current levels. We aim to be true to our word and our first priority will be to halve carbon emissions per kWh within 10 years.
Less coal
To cut down on carbon emissions, we have decided to close production down at 25% of our coal-fired power stations. What’s more, we have also ceased development of new coal-fired plants and there are plans afoot to convert some of the remaining coal-fired plants for power generation via biomass.
More wind energy
Nature has provided us with more than sufficient amounts of wind. At present, DONG Energy is the world leader in the development and construction of off-shore wind parks and it is our aim to consolidate this position.

Natural gas is the future
There is a demand for natural gas, it is readily available, and it may be stored. In addition, substantially lower quantities of CO2 are released during the combustion of natural gas than is the case with the combustion of coal and oil. Natural gas is therefore indispensable to guaranteeing years of reliable and more environmentally friendly energy supply to power plants, industry and consumers. At DONG Energy, we have given this a lot of thought: thanks to a goal-oriented investment plan, we have succeeded in securing a significantly continuous level of natural gas production. We also supplement our own production via long-term agreements with external suppliers.
