Herning CHP Plant

Herning CHP Plant is situated in the southern part of Herning and was commissioned in 1982. In 2000 the CHP plant was converted to natural gas and in 2002 it switched to chip-firing. The CHP plant has a capacity of 89 MW of electricity and 174 MJ/s of heat.  In 2006 that plant generated 271 GWh of electricity and 2,206 TJ of district heat. The CHP plant has approximately 30 employees.

Herning CHP Plant produces heat and electricity using chips as the primary fuel and natural gas as supplementary fuel. As required, fuel oil instead of natural gas is used for the main boiler. In 2006 the share of chips used as fuel was approximately 70%, natural gas constituted approximately 17% and fuel oil around 13%. Thus, Herning CHP Plant is Denmark’s largest chip-fired plant, burning 200,000 tonnes of chips annually.
