Fuel
We produce power and heat by using several types of fuel. This includes:
- Coal
- Natural gas
- Diesel
- Fuel oil
- Waste
- Biomass such as straw, wood pellets and wood
Coal, which is still our primary source of fuel, constituted approx. 60 % of our fuel in 2010, but our vision is to supply clean and reliable energy. As part of this vision we are working to reduce CO2 emissions per kilowatt hour produced from power and heat production at our power plants. This means that in the future we will increase the use of biomass while also using less coal.
Benefits of increasing use of biofuel
- Wood pellets can replace coal, while straw can only supplement coal
- DONG Energy expects to replace approx. 1 million tonnes of coal with approx. 1.5 million tonnes of wood pellets at the power plants in Avedøre 1 and Studstrup 3.
- This reorganisation will result in direct savings of 2.5 million tonnes of CO2 per year.
