Using biomass as a co-fuel

DONG Energy replaces fossil fuels with biomass and waste in power and heat generation. In fact, most of DONG Energy’s power plants can easily switch production between different types of fuel. Our power and heat generation is based mainly on coal, but we also use oil and natural gas, plus waste and biomass, such as straw, wood pellets, and wood chips.

Biomass and waste do not negatively impact the climate in the same way as the fossil fuels coal, oil, and natural gas. Biomass is considered a CO2 neutral fuel, because it produces the same amount of CO2 when burned as it absorbs during growth. Much of the waste used is biomass, and therefore treated as a CO2 neutral fuel.
