The world’s poor are the most vulnerable to climate change. At the same time, these people depend on energy for their daily survival and for them to be able to improve their living conditions. That is why it makes good sense to support local projects ensuring climate-friendly utilisation and production of energy. CARE Danmark and DONG Energy have therefore entered into a collaboration agreement on the development of energy projects, which strengthen poor people in Ghana and Vietnam in a sustainable manner.
“The cooperation agreement with DONG Energy provides us with the chance to develop projects that combine CO2 reductions with economic and social advantages for poor and vulnerable people in Ghana and Vietnam. Thus we are positive towards testing the new options that the carbon markets provide to finance our work”, says Niels Tofte, National Director and CEO of CARE Danmark.
”We are delighted to be able to cooperate with CARE Danmark on activities, which improve living conditions for people in poor local communities. We hope that the agreement will herald the start of a number of climate projects that prove sustainable in the long term”, says Anders Eldrup, CEO of DONG Energy.
CARE Danmark’s task will be to identify and develop poverty-oriented climate projects, and DONG Energy will contribute with know-how and financial support as well as buy any CDM credits generated by the projects.
CDM credits – Clean Development Mechanism – are CO2 reductions from projects in developing countries that would not have occurred without third-party investment. The company or state that buys the emission reductions can credit them in their CO2 accounts.
The climate projects undergo a rigorous and public approval procedure to ensure that they produce genuine CO2 reductions. In addition, climate projects are closely monitored by independent bodies as well as the UN’s CDM Executive Board.
CARE Danmarks approach is to ensure the sustainability of the CDM-projects. The projects need to be viable and guarantee social and economic advantages for the people that will implement the changes locally.
CARE Danmark is part of CARE International – one of the largest humanitarian organisations in the world. CARE International implements development projects and emergency relief in more than 70 countries, benefiting more than 45 million poor people. Our goal is long-term. We work in locally anchored projects in order to strengthen the world’s most vulnerable people – before the disasters occur. For further information, see www.care.dk.
