Denmark has constantly been at the cutting edge when it comes to wind turbines.
The world's biggest wind turbine - at the time - was installed in the Danish town Gedser in 1957. It was in operation for ten years without problems and almost without maintenance.
When it could be foreseen that it might be difficult to find a sufficient number of suitable onshore sites, Denmark was again the place where the world’s first offshore wind turbines were installed in 1991. This opened the way for DONG Energy’s position as world leader within offshore wind farms.
12 October 2011 it is exactly 20 years ago that the then Ministry for Industry, Anne-Birgitte Lundholt, inaugurated the offshore wind farm, situated North of the small town Vindeby on Lolland.
Of the eleven original wind turbines, ten of them are still in operation.
Watch the video with two of the pioneers
Already in Summer 1991, the first electricity was exported onshore from Vindeby Offshore Wind Farm, a couple of months prior to the minister's official inauguration. On this occassion, Vital produced a video with two employees who attended this piece of pioneering work.
