DONG Energy signs agreement on Dutch LNG terminal

The agreement provides DONG Energy import capacity up to 3 billion m3 of natural gas per year for a period of 20 years commencing 2011. A terminal will be built in the Port of Rotterdam, from where the gas will be transported onwards into the Dutch gas transmission system.

In addition to the capacity agreement, DONG Energy has acquired a 5 per cent stake in the terminal.

”The agreement with Gate terminal B.V. will enable us to supplement our pipe-based natural gas supplies from Denmark, Norway, UK and Russia with natural gas from other parts of the world, further allowing us to diversify our sources of supply and ensure flexibility in the future”, says DONG Energy CEO Anders Eldrup.

Facts – LNG
LNG is natural gas that liquefies when cooled to -161 degrees Celsius. In liquefied form, the gas occupies 600 times less volume than natural gas at room temperature. In liquid form, natural gas can be transported in customised tankers, opening up the option of importing natural gas from remote destinations. In the receiving terminal the natural gas is transferred in liquefied form to storage tanks and then pressurised before it is transported into the gas transmission system for onwards distribution and sale.

Facts – Gate terminal B.V.
The promoters and majority owners of Gate terminal are the state-owned Dutch transmission company Gasunie and the world’s largest independent oil terminal operator Vopak, and the other companies that have secured import capacity in the terminal are Austrian EconGas, Dutch Essent and DONG Energy.

The terminal in the Port of Rotterdam will be built in the coming years and is scheduled for operation in 2011. The terminal is expected to have a capacity of 9 billion m3 per year in phase one, with the option to expand the capacity in a subsequent phase.

With its location in the Port of Rotterdam, Gate terminal has a central geographical location in relation to DONG Energy’s business activities, with good infrastructure links to the Dutch and adjoining markets - Germany, Belgium and the UK.
With the liberalisation of the European gas markets LNG will be a part of the total port folio in terms of supplying DONG Energy’s customers in all markets.
