We are optimising offshore wind

Challenge

Wind power technology has undergone extensive development, and offshore wind farms are today described as actual wind power stations. However, generating electricity from wind power continues to be more expensive than using fossil fuels.

This is what DONG Energy is doing

DONG Energy operates a number of innovation projects focusing on offshore wind power. Common to these projects is that they are designed to reduce the costs of wind power and improve profitability.

We focus on the areas in which research, development and demonstration have the greatest cost reduction potential per kWh produced. At the same time, we are developing standard concepts and products for use in the planning, construction and maintenance of offshore wind farms, which also contributes to the reduction of costs.

We are involved in several international offshore wind power programmes all of which are aimed at promoting research and development that can reduce the price of wind energy.

We are enhancing oil & gas recovery

Challenge

The world’s population is increasing, and more people are able to afford a modern life style. Due to this, the consumption of fossil fuels is increasing. Oil and natural gas are essential for transport and as raw material in many of the products we use in our everyday life – from a range of chemicals to various types of plastic and rubber.

The fossil sources of energy are also necessary for DONG Energy to be able to ensure the energy our customers need many years ahead – also in the transition phase to the energy system of the future.

This is what DONG Energy is doing

DONG Energy increases the energy supply by deploying new technologies which enhance the recovery rate in existing oil and gas fields. We focus on technological developments which will help us discover new reserves and enhance recovery in the existing fields.

Due to these activities, the period during which Denmark will be self-sufficient in oil and natural gas will be extended, and this will benefit both the Danish economy and DONG Energy.

We are developing the Smart Grid

Challenge

The future Danish energy system is expected to be dominated by renewable energy sources that primarily generate electricity. We must therefore switch to an energy system in which electricity meets an ever-increasing share of energy consumption.

Our existing energy system is not geared to handle large amounts of electricity from fluctuating, renewable energy that generates power when the wind is blowing and the sun is shining. That is a challenge to security of supply.

This is what DONG Energy is doing

At DONG Energy, we are making good headway on meeting the challenges that come with the transition to the energy landscape of tomorrow. We are developing a flexible Smart Grid that is to ensure continuous balancing of electricity generation from renewable energy and electricity consumption.

For example, we are testing consumers’ possibility of practising flexible electricity consumption, and we are also developing intelligent management of decentralised electricity-consuming and generating units. We are also involved in the development of solutions for managing and storing renewable energy.

We are utilising biomass

Challenge

In Denmark, political objectives require 50% of our electricity consumption to come from wind by 2020, coal to be phased out by 2030, and the supply of electricity and heat to be covered by renewable energy by 2035.

This is what DONG Energy is doing

Through our focus on biorefining, in DONG Energy we work on solutions that intelligently and efficiently utilise biomass for energy purposes, contributing to reducing dependence on fossil energy.

We were proud to be the first in the world to build biomass-fired power stations. We are still in the lead when it comes to generating electricity and heat using biomass. And now we are taking the lead again by developing a biorefinery concept that converts biomass and waste to valuable fuels that, in the longer term, will be able to replace oil as raw material in, for example, petrol, plastics and chemicals.

We have already taken the first major steps in that direction by developing three unique technologies – Inbicon, Pyroneer and REnescience – which utilise biomass and waste for energy purposes.
