Kathrine Hansen, Lab Technologist

Why DONG Energy?
We have a highly functional lab and there is a constant flow of new tasks, partly because of more stringent environmental certification and regulation.

Quality conscious and good at prioritising
I’m a lab technologist and did an internship at the Grindsted Power plant. After a few years as instructor at the Aabenraa College of Laboratory Sciences, I came to work in the lab at the Ensted Power plant. My job is all about being conscientious, and it is important to have a good grasp of figures. It is an advantage to be curious and to take an interest in where the samples come from and what the analyses are going to be used for. That makes it an interesting line of work. You have to be quality conscious without being fussy. Some assignments involve finding the level rather than the precise figure, so you need to appreciate the task at hand and be able to prioritise.

Fuel analyses and environmental measurements
One of the things we measure is the calorific value of the various sorts of coal burned at our power plants, so that we know how efficiently we are using the energy. It is also our job to check that we are complying with emission requirements governing fuel gasses and waste water. For example, we measure coal carbon content to calculate the CO2 emission, so as to not exceed our CO2 quota.
