Turbine installation completed

On Friday 29 June, the last of the 25 turbines was installed on Burbo Offshore Wind Farm. This was the culmination of a very hectic and very successful installation period.

From the beginning of May, all parts of the turbines started to arrive at the Port of Mostyn. In Mostyn, the towers were erected and preassembled. This was done by technicians from Siemens Wind Power working day and night. The hubs and the nacelles were assembled, and the blades were stored until the offshore transport. The intension was off course to do as much work as possible on shore before the offshore installation

The turbines are of the most modern type; each with an output of 3.6MW equal to more than 4,500 horse powers.
To generate this amount of power from the wind, you need very large turbines. At a point in time, an area equal to more than five football fields were used to store all the turbine parts.

In the end of May the jack-up barge 'Jumping Jack' arrived in Mostyn accompanied by two tugs. In Mostyn, Jumping Jack loaded three wind turbine towers – each 60 metres long – and the nacelles (the generator houses) each weighing 177 tonnes and 9 turbine blades. Then the Jumping Jack was towed off shore, jacked-up on her four legs next to one of the wind turbine foundations installed last year, and then she was ready to install a wind turbine.

The offshore installation went very well; from 'jacked-up and ready' to complete installation of a turbine only took between eight and nine hours at some positions. After complete installation of three complete, the Jumping Jack returned to Mostyn to pick up another three turbines, until all 25 were installed.
